IN PRAISE OF RURAL COMMUNITIES

I grew up in a small, rural community in northeast Nebraska.   I have fond memories of teachers, football games, and field trips.  The smaller class sizes allowed teachers to get to know us on a more personal level.  These teachers knew our parents and our siblings.  If you did something positive, you would be congratulated by many.  On the flip side however, if you stepped out of line, the community would know that as well.  The closeness of people within smaller communities cannot be rivaled by all of the bells and whistles found in cities.   In rural communities, we know our neighbors.  We care about our neighbors.  We depend on our neighbors.  We share in their triumphs and we share in their sorrow.  In larger cities, one can often feel like one of many.  In rural communities, everyone is important.  I received a first class education in my small Nebraska town.  I look forward to playing a part in providing that same experience to other students.

This poem by Angela Maiers is something I want all of our students to realize!
